Welcome to The Reasons to Believe podcast, episode #196. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.
Our Reasons to Believe Scripture Passage for today is John 7:17. It reads, “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.”
Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from R. A. Torrey. He said, “The truly wise man is he who believes the Bible against the opinions of any man. If the Bible says one thing, and any body of men says another, the wise man will decide, “This book is the Word of him who cannot lie”.”
Today we are continuing the topic of scripture, its inerrancy, infallibility and inspiration using “Our God-breathed Book: The Bible – The Verbally Inspired, Eternal, Inerrant Word of God” by John R. Rice. Our Reasons to Believe powerpoint today comes from Chapter 1: “Inspiration: Holy Ground: Pull Off Your Shoes!” Part 10.
3. Thousands Have Proved That the Honest Heart Can Know Whether the Bible Is True
Anyone who really wants to know whether the Bible is true or not, whether Christ is deity, virgin born, an atoning Saviour, can find out.
Dr. A. T. Pierson says:
There have been many candid doubters, but never one who had carefully studied the Evidences of Christianity. Mr. Hume confessed himself the prince of sceptics, as Voltaire was the prince of scoffers, and dark indeed were those depths of doubt into which his speculations plunged him. He said of those speculations: “They have so wrought upon me and heated my brain that I am ready to reject all belief and reasoning, and can look upon no opinion even as more probable or likely than another.” And yet, though pretending to great diligence in the search after truth, and using all his fine powers and culture to destroy faith in the Gospel, he confessed, as Dr. Johnson tells us, that he had never read even the New Testament with attention.
Whenever an honest doubter comes to me, I feel perfectly safe in calmly saying, to his face, “You have never studied the evidences, and it is likely never attentively examined the Bible.” And that arrow never misses its mark.
Some five years since, I was brought into contact with a man who took pride in his sceptical opinions and made a boast of not being misled by the credulity of Christians. I ventured to take the old arrow out of my quiver. I said, “You have never thoroughly studied the Bible, sir.” He turned my arrow aside, saying very positively, “You are mistaken there; for I have been familiar with the Bible from my boyhood.” And yet within ten minutes he had shown that he did not know the difference between Job and Lot, but thought it was Job that lived in Sodom and dwelt with his two daughters in the cave!
If there is one candid doubter living who has faithfully studied the Bible and the Evidences of Christianity, he has not yet been found. Before this course of argument is concluded, your attention will be called to two prominent Englishmen who agreed to assault Christianity; but in order to conduct the assault the more successfully and skillfully, they agreed also first to examine it thoroughly; but when they began honestly to search the scriptures, they could no longer doubt that the Bible was the Word of God, and so Gilbert West and Lord Lyttleton became converts and defenders of that same faith they were about to attack.
Just as Gilbert West and Lord Lyttleton set out to study the Bible to answer the claims of the resurrection of Christ and of the conversion of the Apostle Paul, and through the Word of God were convinced and wrote books to preach the truth they once scorned, so may any honest man be convinced who approaches the Bible with an open heart.
Dr. R. A. Torrey again and again faced infidels and skeptics with a challenge that he could show them how to know for sure that the Bible is true and that Christ was the Son of God, the Saviour. Those who accepted his challenge were happily saved; those who backed down, of course, were those who did not want to know the truth because they did not want to turn from their sins.
D. L. Moody, Sam Jones, the late Dr. Bob Jones, Sr., Billy Sunday, along with this writer, have come face to face with unbelief and have challenged the skeptic to face the Word of God and turn with a penitent heart from sin and to see if the Bible were true. And always, the honest heart who seeks light comes to Christ.
Do not count the scholarly unbeliever as being forced by actual evidence to disbelieve the Bible and reject the claims of Christ. No, his trouble is heart trouble, not head trouble, a wicked bias of the heart that chooses darkness instead of light, and by feigned words pretends honesty and scholarship and morality.
Lord willing, we will begin the topic “Beware of “Scholars” Who Do Not Believe the Bible Is God’s Word” in our next episode.
Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Until next time, my friend, please keep in mind these reasons to believe. God bless!
